Hibberd Intermediate School
The Hibberd Garden began with 5 8th graders in the Early College Program in the summer of 2014 who was mentored by Tiauna Washington, a science teacher, who wanted to start a organic vegetable garden at Hibberd Intermediate School in Richmond Indiana. This initiative was part of their year long bridgeway project that they have to do during their 8th grade year. The students and Ms. Washington felt it was important to know where our food comes from and to try to grow our own food here on campus so it can be used in cafeteria for our lunches. After presenting to YAR, Youth as Resources, the group received a $500 grant to start the garden. With the grant, we were able to install 5 raised beds along with 2 elevated beds for our Life Skills students who use wheelchairs. We have grown various vegetables over the years with selling our harvest to students, faculty and staff, and parents to reinvest in the garden. Ms. Washington sponsors a garden club open to grades 3rd-8th grades.
